Vertex characterization of partition polytopes of bipartitions and of planar point sets

چکیده
The partition problem concerns the partitioning of n given vectors in d-space into p parts, so as to maximize an objective function which is convex on the sum of vectors in each part. The problem has applications in diverse 4elds that include clustering, inventory, scheduling and statistical hypothesis testing. Since the objective function is convex, the partition problem can be reduced to the problem of maximizing the same objective over the partition polytope, de4ned to be the convex hull of all solutions. In this article we completely characterize the vertices of partition polytopes when either d=2 or p=2, and determine the maximum number of vertices of any partition polytope of n vectors when d = 2 or p = 2 up to a constant factor. Our characterization implies a bijection between vertices of the polytope of 0-separable partitions, and is best possible in the sense that there are examples in the literature showing the analogue fails already for p = d = 3. Our enumerative results provide lower bounds on the time complexity needed to solve the partition problem when the objective function is presented by an oracle. ? 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. For a given lattice, we establish an equivalence involving a closed zone of the corresponding Voronoi polytope, a lamina hyperplane of the corresponding Delaunay partition and a quadratic form of rank 1 being an extreme ray of the corresponding L-type domain. 1991 Mathematics Subject classification: primary 52C07; secondary 11H55 An n-dimensional lattice determines two normal partitions of the ...

In this paper, we study both concepts of geodetic dominatingand edge geodetic dominating sets and derive some tight upper bounds onthe edge geodetic and the edge geodetic domination numbers. We also obtainattainable upper bounds on the maximum number of elements in a partitionof a vertex set of a connected graph into geodetic sets, edge geodetic sets, geodetic domin...
متن کاملk-TUPLE DOMATIC IN GRAPHS
For every positive integer k, a set S of vertices in a graph G = (V;E) is a k- tuple dominating set of G if every vertex of V -S is adjacent to at least k vertices and every vertex of S is adjacent to at least k - 1 vertices in S. The minimum cardinality of a k-tuple dominating set of G is the k-tuple domination number of G. When k = 1, a k-tuple domination number is the well-studied domination...
متن کاملPolytopes of partitions of numbers
We study the vertices and facets of the polytopes of partitions of numbers. The partition polytope n P is the convex hull of the set of incidence vectors of all partitions 1 2 2 ... n n x x nx = + + +. We show that the sequence 1 2 n P P P can be treated as an embedded chain. Dynamics of behavior of the vertices of n P , as n increases, is established. Some sufficient and some necessary conditi...
